The 2022 Apple event returned as a live, in-person presentation in early September. They covered upgrades for the iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods. It also included a larger overhaul of iOS. Apple released 4 new iPhones with various improved features, two of which include the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

For the first time since the iPhone 12 lineup, there is no iPhone 14 Mini. The small-screened phone has been discontinued in favor of a new, 6.7-inch non-Pro model that allows users to have the big-screen iPhone without paying for the high-end tech that’s included with the iPhone Pro models.

The iPhone 14 release date was announced as September 16 of 2022, while the iPhone 14 Plus was announced for October 7 of 2022. In its packaging, it comes with the iPhone, USB-C to Lightning Cable, and documentation. Find out everything you need to know about the iPhone 14 lineup, what’s new, the colors of the phones, and the prices.

Specifications for the iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch screen size and the 14 Plus has the new, 6.7-inch screen, giving users 21% more screen. Both come with the Super Retina XDR display, True Tone, wide color, and haptic touch. The OLED technology delivers an incredible contrast for bright whites and true blacks while the high resolution and color accuracy make everything look sharp and true to life. The True Tone makes the display easier on the eyes, adjusting to the ambient light.

Made with materials like aerospace-grade aluminum and a ceramic shield, it is splash and water resistant with a max depth of 6 meters up to 30 minutes.

While the iPhone 14 still comes with the same A15 Bionic chip as the iPhone 13, it will add a 5-core GPU which offers a 20% graphics boost. It has also improved the thermal performance so you can push your iPhone 14 usage for longer, which is extremely beneficial for those who use their phone for activities like gaming and long video streaming.

What’s New with the iPhone 14

Back in 2020, the iPhone had a large redesign that brought back the iPhone 4’s flat, rounded, and boxy design. Since then, the overall design has stayed the same from the release of the 12 to the 14, except the iPhone 14 is slightly larger than the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 is 0.15mm thicker and 2g heavier, but otherwise has the same look and feel as the 13. The iPhone 14 also has the same A15 Bionic chip that’s in the iPhone 13 Pro.

The iPhone 14 is also Apple’s lightest phone in the new iPhone 14 range, weighing 30 grams less than the similar-sized iPhone 14 Pro, which starts at 842 € compared to 748 €. Compared to the Pros, it does not have the same updated screen technology, still has a notch, and comes with two rear cameras versus three.

Despite that, everything has improved technologically. The cameras have improved, colors have been changed, the battery life continues to improve, and the internal technology becomes more advanced.

Here are some of the biggest, most popular features that are new to the iPhone 14.

Camera Performance

Apple has introduced new technology across the iPhone 14 range called Photonic Engine. It merges the best pixels from multiple exposures at an earlier stage. This helps preserve more image data to deliver brighter, more lifelike colors and detailed textures even in lower light.

This improved camera system features the new, rear-facing 12Mp camera with a larger sensor and larger 1.9-micron pixels that improve the performance in low-light by 49%. Users will see up to 2.5 times better low-light photos on the Main camera and up to 2 times better low-light photos on the Ultra Wide camera.

The front-facing camera has also seen an upgrade with the 12Mp camera, as well as improved low-light performance and autofocus. With the new TrueDepth front camera, users will see up to 2 times better low-light photos.

Battery Life

Every year Apple releases the new iPhone, and they improve the battery life. The best battery life is the iPhone 14 Plus, but even the iPhone 14 has seen an upgrade. Users will see up to 26 hours of video playback on the iPhone 14 Plus and up to 20 hours of video playback on the iPhone 14.

SIM Tray Removal

The only design change that came to the iPhone 14 was the removal of the SIM tray. Instead, Apple has introduced eSIM. An industry-standard technology, it allows users to activate their new iPhones or add carriers digitally. Unlike the physical card, eSIM can’t be removed if the iPhone is lost or stolen. Users can also activate their eSIM for the country or region they are visiting, as well as activate multiple phone numbers and data plans on one phone.

Action Mode

Action Mode joins the other camera modes within the iPhone 14 camera app. It allows users to shoot videos that resemble the image results of a GoPro, utilizing Dolby Vision and HDR video recording. It is a great mode to capture content without worrying about destabilization or shakiness, especially for videos that have heavy movements like running and jumping.

Crash Detection

Crash Detection is designed to detect severe crashes including front-impact, side-impact, rear-end collisions, and rollovers. It can detect crashes with sedans, minivans, SUVs, pickup trucks, and other passenger cars.

When a crash happens, the iPhone sounds an alarm. An alert will be displayed on the screen that the iPhone reads, along with an Emergency Call slider. This allows users to choose to call emergency services or dismiss the alert. If the user is unable to respond, the iPhone will automatically call after 20 seconds.

The device also shares a message to send the location with emergency contacts to let them know the user has been in a crash. If a user has set up a Medical ID, this will also display on the screen as a slider so emergency responders can access that information.

Emergency SOS via Satellite

The Emergency SOS via Satellite connects users with emergency services when they otherwise cannot reach them. If the iPhone is outside its cellular and Wi-Fi coverage range, the iPhone will try to connect via satellite to get the help needed. You can also use Find My with this feature to share your location via satellite so friends and family know where you are.

With a direct view of the sky, messages could take only 15 seconds to send. If there is light to medium foliage covering overhead, it could take over a minute. With heavy foliage or other surrounding obstructions, it may not be able to connect at all. iPhone will front-load a few questions to assess a situation, and all a user needs to do is tap to respond. Once connected, the iPhone will send your answers, location, Medical ID, and battery level to a dispatcher.

This feature will be available on the iOS 16 software update as of November 2022. It will be included for free with the iPhone 14 for two years.

CarPlay Next Generation

With vehicle announcements coming late-2023, CarPlay will cover all of a driver’s screens. Communication with the vehicle’s systems will allow for driving information on instrument cluster displays and control of the radio and HVAC. This will be specific to each vehicle and accommodate unique screen shapes and layouts. There will also be fueling and driving task apps available in CarPlay. These apps will help fill your tank and provide you with road information, toll support, towing help, and more.

iOS 16

Many of the new functions of the iPhone 14 are tied to the iOS 16 software update. Many of the features above are tied to the iPhone 14, but there are other updates within the iOS 16 update that are compatible with existing hardware like the iPhone 12 and 13.

New Lock Screen

The lock screen has been completely redesigned. The notifications have switched to the bottom of the screen to leave more space for the focal point of photos. Widgets have also been added, allowing users to put the weather, calendar appointments, alarms, time zones, Activity ring progress, and battery status on the screen without having to unlock the phone first.

There are other design changes, like being able to pick the font and color for time and date, built-in photo filters, and clever depth effects. The Focus feature also allows users to set up different lock screens and home screens based on working, traveling, or at home.

The Live Activities feature helps users stay on top of real-time events directly on the lock screen. Through this feature, users can follow sports games, track the progress of a ride, or order with just a glance using new developer APIs.

As they have done in the past for the Apple Watch display screen, Apple has introduced a collection of dynamic, classic, and landscape lock screens to pair with iOS 16:

    • Astronomy: See the earth, moon, or solar system
    • Weather: Glance at live conditions on your lock screen as the weather changes
  • Emoji: Create patterned lock screens based on your favorite emoji
  • Colors: Choose a gradient using your favorite color combinations
  • Message Management

Some features have been added to the iPhone messenger app that clean up the system. Now users can delete and edit messages after they’ve been sent and before the other person has read the message. Users can also mark messages unread after they’ve opened them if they want to be reminded to respond.

Using SharePlay through messages, users can share synchronized activities like movies, music, workouts, games, and more with friends. You can also send an invitation to collaborate on a project in messages, and all those on the thread will be added to the document, spreadsheet, or projects. This will be compatible with Files, Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Notes, Reminders, or Safari.

    Family Sharing

Within Family Sharing, parents can assign user profiles for children and turn on age-appropriate restrictions across devices from one place. It also allows parents to extend screen time limits through the messaging app if the children ask for more time. The Family Checklist also reminds them to review active parent controls and deactivate or raise limits.

    iCloud Shared Photo Library

Instead of having to share individual photos or albums, families and friends can now have an iCloud Shared Photo Library with up to five other people. Members will manually select photos from their camera rolls or use smart suggestions that recognize faces to recommend pictures others might want to see. All the members of the library have equal permissions to edit, favorite, and delete across all devices. There is also a switch in the camera app that will automatically share new photos directly to the shared library when enabled. This feature will be available in late 2022.

Another new feature to the camera app is the Duplicates function, which shows all the duplicates on the phone and allows them to merge together to save storage space.

    Map Navigation

Instead of having to reroute several times on a trip, the Maps app now has multi-stop routing to plan a trip with several stops along the main route. If you are taking public transportation, you can also pay within the Maps app using Apple Pay if the network supports contactless payments and ticketing.

    Colors

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have a ceramic shield front, glass back, and aerospace-grade aluminum design, and come in a glossy finish for all colors. Both models come in:

    • Midnight
    • Blue
    • Starlight
    • Purple
    • (PRODUCT)RED

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Plus

The iPhone 14 is one of the best options for people, coming in at the most affordable iPhone from the newest smartphone lineup. Similar to last year’s iPhone 13 Pro, it has a slightly improved thermal design that keeps the phone cool when using it. Otherwise, many of the upgrades that come with the iPhone 14s are associated with the new iOS 16 update.

The two main differences between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus is that the Plus is larger and has a longer battery life. While the iPhone 14 has a screen size of 6.1 inches, the Plus features a 6.7-inch screen. Apple estimates that the Plus should get up to 26 hours of battery life while the standard iPhone 14 gets up to 20 hours.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro

The biggest differences between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro are the design and some of the technological capabilities.

While in design the iPhone 14s look similar to the iPhone 13 Pros, the iPhone 14 Pro lineup received a massive design upgrade. The most notable design change is the removal of the Face ID notch on the front of the screen, replacing it with a pill-shaped and circular cut-out called the “Dynamic Island”. This area houses the sensor for the Face ID and cameras, appearing and disappearing based on what the user is doing with the phone. They also feature the Always-On Display which allows the phone to display things like time and date without the screen being completely on.

The Apple iPhone 14 lineup runs on the same chipset as the iPhone 13 Pro, while the iPhone 14 Pro lineup are the only models to have received the A16 Bionic chipset, including a 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores.

Another difference between the two model lineups is the camera. The iPhone 14s have the dual camera lineup with a 12Mp main wide camera and a secondary ultra-wide camera. The iPhone 14 Pros got an upgrade. Not only do they have the triple camera, but there is a 48Mp main sensor, the 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with a wider aperture, and a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor. Because of this, the Pros are able to offer ProRes, allowing users to shoot 48-megapixel raw shots.

How Much Does the iPhone 14 Cost

Since removing the iPhone Mini from the 14 range, the standard iPhone 14 base price has increased. When the iPhone 13 range was announced, the standard model was 654€. Now, the iPhone 14 starts at 748€.

Here is the iPhone 14 complete range cost:

    iPhone 14

    • 126GB = 748€
    • 256GB = 842€
    • 512GB = 1029€

    iPhone 14 Plus

    • 126GB = 842€
    • 256GB = 935€
