The Ultimate Guide to the iPhone 14 Pro

Switch to Spanish

In early September, Apple gathered in person to present the 2022 new lineup for iPhones, Apple Watches, and Airpods. In this release, they also unveiled a large overhaul of iOS. For the iPhones, Apple released four new models, two of which are the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max release dates were announced as September 16, 2022. They are available with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. With the iPhone Pro packaging, users will receive the iPhone, USB-C to Lightning Cable, and documentation. Find out everything you need to know about the iPhone 14 Pro lineup, what’s new, the colors of the phones, and their pricing.

Specifications for the iPhone 14 Pro

iPhone 14 Pro

While the bezels are slightly slimmer, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max still have the same screen sizes, coming in at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, and have the Super Retina XDR display. Both models come with ProMotion technology, an HDR display, True Tone, and haptic touch. They are splash- and water-resistant, with a maximum depth of six meters, for up to 30 minutes.

One of the biggest specification differences this year has to do with the chipset. In previous years, the iPhone Pro used the same one as the standard iPhone, but the iPhone 14 Pro lineup has changed this.

In this release, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are the only models to receive the upgraded A16 Bionic chipset, including a 6-core CPU with two performance and four efficiency cores, which makes them 40% faster than the competition.

What’s New with the iPhone 14 Pro?

iPhone 14 Pro

While the back of the iPhone 14 Pros looks nearly identical to the 13s, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max offer new front-facing design changes, exclusive features, and many new upgrades. The most notable design change is the elimination of the Face ID notch on the front of the screen that debuted with the iPhone X, replacing it with a pill-shaped and circular cut-out called the “Dynamic Island.” This houses the sensor for the Face ID and cameras, placing the proximity sensor behind the display. The Dynamic Island appears to expand and retract based on what the user is doing on the phone like using music playback, doing FaceTime, or making payments.

This functionality is also in tandem with the iPhone 14 Pro’s LTPO OLED panel. With this new screen feature, it can deactivate pixels to colors like black, which actually appear like true black versus a dark gray.

Another new feature with the iPhone 14 Pro is the Always-On display. This allows the time, date, and notifications to be seen, even when the screen isn’t completely on. With this new feature, users do not have to lift the phone or tap the screen to see these elements. When the iPhone is turned face down or in a pocket, that’s when it goes completely dark to save battery life.

Camera Upgrade

iPhone 14 Pro

For the first time, the iPhone 14 Pro models will work with more than just a 12Mp main camera. It now uses a 48Mp main, wide-angle lens, which is a huge upgrade from the 12Mp. The sensor is 65% larger than the iPhone 13 Pro, powered by the ultimate smartphone chip. This advanced quad-pixel sensor provides enhanced clarity and color to most photographs without reducing low-light performance.

The iPhone 14 lineup also introduces the new “Photogenic Engine”. It improves the optics, merging the best pixels from multiple exposures at an earlier stage. It helps preserve more image data, delivering brighter, more lifelike colors and detailed textures even in lower light.

The iPhone Pro and Pro Max get an upgraded 12Mp ultra-wide camera, taking in three times more light and helping with macro photography. The new front-facing camera also comes with an f/1.9 aperture and includes autofocus for selfies. Lastly, Cinematic Mode sees an upgrade, shooting at 4K HDR at 24 fps which is a film industry standard.

Battery Life

Even with all the upgrades and new high-technology features, iPhone 14 Pro still delivers all-day battery life. With the iPhone 14 Pro, users can see up to 23 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max users will see up to 29 hours.

Action Mode

The Action Mode is a new addition to the camera app, joining Cinematic, Time-Lapse, and Slo-Mo. With this new mode, the user can shoot, view, edit, and share videos in ProRes or Dolby Vision HDR. The content captured in Action Mode resembles the image results of a GoPro, working at 60 or 30 fps with up to 2.8k resolution. Using the overscan of the 4k 48Mp sensor, it helps stabilize the image, removing any shakiness that tends to happen with heavy movements like running, jumping, and hiking.

No SIM Card Tray

Across all four of the new iPhone 14s, Apple has removed the physical SIM cards, replacing them with the eSIM. With this new technology feature, users can activate new iPhones or add carriers digitally without the need for a physical card. The eSIM cannot be removed if an iPhone is lost or stolen, making it easier to locate. It can also be used to activate multiple phone numbers and data plans on a phone, on top of activating a country or region when traveling.

Crash Detection

This new safety feature detects severe crashes involving front-impact, side-impact, and rear-end collisions, as well as rollovers. The new iPhone can detect when a passenger vehicle has been in a huge crash of some type, using two gyroscopes within it.

When the crash happens, the iPhone sounds an alarm and displays an alert on the screen. After showing the alert, it displays an Emergency Call slider, which a user can select to call emergency services. The user can also simply dismiss the alert. If the user is unable to respond within 20 seconds, the iPhone will automatically call an emergency line.

This feature also shares a message with any emergency contacts, which includes the user’s location, letting those contacts know that the user has been in a crash. If the Medical ID has been set up, this will also display on the screen, so any emergency responders can quickly and easily access this information using the slider option.

Emergency SOS via Satellite

The iPhone 14 lineup also introduces new satellite connectivity. When emergency services cannot be reached using cellular or WiFi coverage, this capability connects users via satellite to get the help that is needed. It can also be used with Find My to share the user’s location via satellite, so friends and family know where they are.

CarPlay Updates

The next generation of CarPlay covers all screen specifics for each vehicle, accommodating unique screen shapes and layouts. It will access driving information across all instrument cluster displays, controlling the radio and HVAC systems. Other driving apps will also be available for tasks like helping users fill their car tank and providing roadside information, toll support, towing help, and more.

iOS 16

Many of the new technology features and functions on the iPhone 14 Pro are tied to the A16 Bionic chip but also the iOS 16 software update. Many of the top features mentioned above are tied specifically to the iPhone 14 Pro, but there are some updates within the iOS 16 update that are also compatible with existing hardware or the standard iPhone 14 models.

Updated Lock Screen

One of the most popular updates with iOS 16 is the lock screen. It has seen a complete redesign with major changes that let users pick the font and color for the time and dates, built-in photo filters, and clever depth effects. For the first time, Apple has rearranged the notifications to sit on the bottom and has added widgets, so information can be viewed directly on the lock screen like weather, calendar appointments, alarms, time zones, Activity ring progress, battery status, and more. The Focus feature also allows users to set up different screens based on working, traveling, or home.

In further customizing the lock screen, Apple has developed dynamic, classic, and landscape backgrounds with iOS 16:

  • Astronomy: displays the earth, moon, or solar system, based on user location
  • Weather: displays live conditions on the screen as the weather changes
  • Emoji: creates a pattern based on a favorite emoji
  • Colors: creates a gradient using favorite color combinations

The new lock screen also introduces Live Activities, helping users stay on top of real-time events. Directly on the lock screen, users can track the progress of a ride, follow sports games, or order just with a glance, using developer APIs.

Messaging App Updates

In Messages, users can now edit up to 15 minutes after sending. Messages can also be unsent for up to two minutes after sending. Another feature introduced to Messages is being able to mark them as unread when users do not have time to respond but want to be sure to reply to a sender later.

Users can also SharePlay via Messages, sharing synchronized activities like movies, music, workouts, games, and more. They can also send invitations to collaborate on projects. All recipients in a thread will be added to any document, spreadsheet, or project. Not only is it compatible with the Apple native apps like Files or Numbers, but it will also function with other third-party apps.

Family Sharing

In Family Sharing, parents will be able to assign user profiles for children and tun on age-appropriate restrictions across all devices, just from their phones. They will also be able to extend screen time limits directly through the messaging app. The added Family Checklist will also set reminders for parents to review active controls and adjust limits.

As part of Family Sharing, the iCloud Shared Photo Library allows up to five people to be added to a single iCloud Library. Those in the library will manually select photos from their camera rolls or use smart suggestions to recognize faces and recommend pictures that others in the group might want to see. Everyone has equal permissions to edit, favorite, and delete across all devices. There is also a new option in the camera to automatically share new photos directly from the shared library when it’s enabled.

This new sharing feature will be available in late 2023.

Map Routing

The Map app has added multi-stop routing to plan a trip with several stops along the main route, enabling efficient driving when users need to stop for food, gas, or stores on the way to their destination. The Map also allows payment within the app using Apple Pay when taking public transportation if the network supports contactless payments and ticketing.

Colors

iPhone 14 Pro

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have a ceramic shield front, textured matte glass back, and stainless steel design. With the now-removable back glass, it allows for easier repairs.

Both models come in:

  • Space Black
  • Silver

How Much Does the iPhone 14 Pro Cost

When Apple first launched the iPhone Pro models, the pricing startled most users. But it is understandable that the price point is higher than the standard models. Users receive the best technology on the market. The pricing for the iPhone 14 Pro range has not changed from the iPhone Pro 13’s release prices, which is good news when it comes to upgrades.

iPhone 14 Pro

  • 128GB = 1.319,00 €
  • 256GB = 1.449,00 €
  • 512GB = 1.709,00 €

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pros

While the standard iPhone 14s received many of the same upgrades that occurred with the iPhone 13 Pros, this caused the iPhone 14 Pros to have a massive upgrade to their overall design and technological capabilities, causing a few key differences between the Pros and the standard 14s.

When released in the past, all iPhone models run on the same chipset. This year, while the iPhone 14s received the same chipset as the iPhone 13 Pro, the iPhone 14 Pro lineup received an upgrade to the A16 Bionic chipset, including a 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores. This enables all the major updates to the capabilities of the Pro lineup without sacrificing the battery life.

The design of the iPhone 14 Pro lineup also sets it apart from the standard iPhone 14s. With the iPhone 14 Pros, they received the “Dynamic Island” which removes the Face ID notch on the front of the screen, replacing it with a pill-shaped and circular cut-out. This still houses the Face ID and cameras, but it can also appear and disappear based on what functions the user has running on the phone. The Always-On display is also an added feature to the Pros that the standard lineup does not have.

The last main difference between the two lineups are the cameras. The iPhone 14 lineups have a dual camera lineup with the 12Mp main wide camera and the secondary ultra-wide camera. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Pros have three cameras, and they received an upgrade. There is the 48Mp main sensor, the 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with a wider aperture, and a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor.

iPhone 14 Pro vs Pro Max

With the Apple lineup providing the best technology they have to offer in a smartphone, it may be difficult to tell the difference between the two Pros. Both have the upgraded display with the pill-shaped camera, but it's important to note that the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s extra screen space can show more information with the new Dynamic Island.

Unlike previous model releases of the iPhone Pro lineup, there are a few differences that separate the Pro and Pro Max. Camera functionality has usually been more advanced with the Pro Max, but this year has changed that. Both models have the upgraded front-facing camera, the new 48-megapixel primary camera on the back, the three-camera system, and LIDAR sensor. Regardless, both have improved when compared to the iPhone 13 Pro lineup.

The main difference between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max comes down to battery life and screen size. The iPhone 14 Pro has a 6.1-inch display and is rated for up to 23 hours of video playback. The iPhone 14 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch display and is rated for up to 29 hours of video playback. If customers are looking for the biggest iPhone with the best battery life, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the option. The iPhone 14 Pro has a more manageable size and still carries all the premium features that set it apart from the rest of the Apple iPhone lineup.
